The Fresh Start Award in honor of Camry Starks 

"The plan is to move. Move out. Move on, move smarter."
Camry Starks 
April 8, 1994-March 27, 2021

 Before his life was tragically cut short, Camry Starks had plans for a FRESH START. He shared with his former teachers that after the birth of his second daughter, he wanted to move away from Springfield, MA. He wanted to get away from the  gun violence that plagued his life since he was an adolescent.  He was working a full time job, being an amazing father to his daughter and bonus children, and in a long term relationship. While optimistic about his future, in one of his last conversations with a teacher,  he shared his worry about the ever increasing threat of violence in his hometown.  

A former alternative high school student, he built strong relationships with  teachers and paraprofessionals over the years, often paying visits, messaging on social media and giving big hugs in public.  He was considered a "nephew" to the staff he'd bonded with since 9th grade. 

Unlike so many in his peer group, Camry was adored and supported by family, friends and educators. Typically many of the students who attend many alternative programs in Springfield do not go on to four year colleges. While the supportive environment offers opportunities for students to be nurtured and challenged, upon graduation students often find themselves without community resources and guidance. They age out of programs, entering the workforce or costly short term training programs. While there are a few who transition to higher education, many more find themselves trapped in  low wage jobs, with limited or no housing, resulting in high mortality and high imprisonment rates.


 The Fresh Start award is for current or former students from alternative educational settings who are looking to end generational patterns and start new. It is a small boost to, as Camry said, help an individual
​ " Move out, move on, move smarter."

Congratulations to our winner Chandra Haywood, a graduate of Springfield Liberty Prep.  Chandra wants to pursue a career in hospitality.   She would also like to attend driving school and receive her license so that she can have reliable transportation.  Thanks to additional support from our community, Chandra was awarded at total of $1200.
